A factor adding to Effingham County, Georgia’s highly skilled workforce is its proximity to the Fort Stewart Army Base, the largest Army installation east of the Mississippi River.

Veterans leaving Fort Stewart in retirement or at the end of their service, along with civilian family members, are significant additions to Effingham County’s potential labor pool.

Fort Stewart is one of the largest employers in Coastal Georgia, and accounts for nearly 75% of the military employment in the area with a total soldier population exceeding 20,000, along with about 30,000 family members. Fort Stewart, in combination with Hunter Army Airfield in Savannah, are estimated to have an annual economic impact of approximately $5 billion.
